I was half watching TV the other day when an ad for a documentary came on. It was about a U.S. navy carrier and life inside of it.
The synopses showed a female crew member stating something along the lines "We're here for freedom!" then proceeded to bomb the shit out of some third world country.

That got me thinking, what is freedom? Some people think it means letting the wealthy do whatever the fuck they want, to others it means being able to drive your dad's car and coming back home at four AM without your parents screaming at you.

I have my own personal definition. It's difficult to explain in words alone but it goes something like this: freedom is having the means, resources and opportunity to lead a dignified, secure and fulfilling life regardless of one's race, sex, religion, political allegiance or social status.

Freedom is sometimes used as a unifying banner but I suspect that freedom means different things to different people.
What does freedom mean to you?

Hey it's not just wealthy people who get to do whatever the fuck they want. People with guns can do that too!

Last Saturday, around 2:00 am, a troop of armed soldiers forced their way into my workplace. I wasn't there, but I hear they arrived by the busload and there was even a helicopter.

Why were they there? No one knows. We were never given a clear answer. And what's more, we were ordered not to make any comments to the press.

Bombing third world countries IS a form of freedom. You free the poor sods caught in the explosions from their lives. And, if they teach you thoroughness, you keep bombing until landscape goes flat.

You pretty much summarized my definition of freedom as well, and I agree that is difficult to explain in words alone. If I made that attempt, I'd probably end up writing at least a 500 page tome...

Unfortunately, the dumbed-down, simplistic, and often ignorant view of what it means to be free is prevalent here (US) at the moment. Has been for some time, actually, as it looks like you've noticed. Even worse now since it's an election year...

Pretty much what you said. A lot of people here (US) tend to toss the word around A LOT, without really knowing what it means or they use it like in the examples you used. But, I'm not going to go off on a "America rawrgh" tangent.

Do what you want cuz a pirate is free! YOU ARE A PIRATE! *goes to raid sum bootah*

You have summed it up friend.

Freedom: To be able to live without the constant threat (fear) of governmental control over your lives, to sleep soundly knowing that nobody is going to kick your door in, drag you out of your own home, imprison you without trial, and execute you just because of your race, ethnicity, social standing, or political affiliation. Freedom is not having your rights (as a human being) impinged upon by another culture, sect, political opponent, or nationality.

The major problem is, when someone cries and screams about their rights being impinged upon, and they use that to block another person's rights, then the system breaks down and all you're left with is intolerance for others. In that aspect, we all want to show that each of us is endowed with inalienable rights, but what some people lack is the respect of other people's personal freedoms, and it's typically those people that we hear the most about on the news.
*steps off his soapbox*
Please forgive the rant. Just woke up.

FUREEEEDOMU!!!

Freedom is a nice thing to have, but, as it is with all nice things, people have a tendency to abuse it.

Freedom is being happy without having to worry about somehow ruining someone else's happiness.
