Since Australia has a movie industry the size of a fly's penis, we have to rely mostly on foreign movies, mainly from the U.S. and UK (since people find it oh-so-hard to read subtitles....).

One trend that I've noticed with movies coming out the U.S. is that there seems to be an awful lot of remakes lately.
Sure, you had the odd ones last century like The Thing, The Fly, King Kong (remade like 20 times), Frankenstein, etc, etc. However, now it seems that they don't even finish shooting a movie before they already start shooting the remake.

Seriously, Hollywood is really running out of ideas. I just heard they are making The Crow again... THE CROW!!! They've already made Conan too! And you know what? Now they've started remaking shit movies too!! Footloose... FUCKING FOOTLOOSE!!!!! WHY IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS SACRED WOULD YOU REMAKE FOOTLOOSE!!!! What's next?! Top Gun? Flashdance?! FUCKIN' BREAKIN' 2-ELECTRIC BOOGALOO WITH FUCKING VAN DAMME DRESSED IN LYCRA DOING SOME RETARD DANCE?!!

I reckon they should leave a movie at least 4-5 decades before they touch it again...

My theory is that some greedy capitalist studio executive fuck thinks to himself "Hey, you know what made us money a few years ago...?"

So instead of giving a new director or screenwriter a chance, they decide to remake the Police Academy series.

Money talks louder than thoughts.

P.S. I just found out that Hollywood is remaking one of my favourite French movies, "Tell No One", to be directed by Ben Affleck... Okay, nothing new here since Hollywood has been ripping off French (along from countless other countries) movies for over 50 years... BUT THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIES, YOU FUCKS!!! If Ben fucks this up like they fucked "Nikita" (fucking awesome in the French version, fucking awful in the U.S. version) I'm gonna wish him head cancer.

You probably wouldn't have liked the case of Quarantine then, remaking [REC] pretty much shot for shot. That and from what I can recall was actually released BEFORE REC in the States, even though REC was made first. And then there's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels...

The US film industry needs to realise that if they remake an awesome film from another country they're not going to make it better. And the Australian film industry...well, there are many Aussie films out there that are pretty decent but don't get the attention they deserve. What are we known for? Bloody Crocodile Dundee and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert  (granted, Priscilla isn't too bad a watch, but you get what I mean) What sucks even more is that one of the reasons Australian movies have a hard time is probably because they can't compete with the copious amounts of money the US films put into promotions. There are exceptions to the rule of course, but do we ever have "blockbusters"?

And yes, remaking The Crow is complete and utter blasphemy. :shakefist:

I rarely watch movies from the U.S. now....

Why wouldn't you remake a bad movie? Make it more tolerant to watch.

and people have been saying that Ben is a fantastic director.

If it was lousy the first time then chances are it will still be lousy with a fresh coat of paint.

Because chances is that it won't be tolerable at all. It is done with target demographics in mind. A step by step marketing exercise.

I'd rather a remake be done with the intention of being better. There's been plenty of remakes, even for movies that weren't bad, that many people consider to be better then the original.

What really burns me is all the resurrected film/tv properties from 80's. I feel like Hollywood is taking my childhood and selling a zombified version of it back to me, with an inch-thick coat of varnish on it.

Bastards.

You hit the nail on the head though - it's all about money and being able to guarantee a 100%+++ return on investment with studio films. No risk involved with most of this crap (hell, it sold once, right?) and people still consume it anyway for reasons I don't entirely understand... Really sad, especially since a lot of truly creative screenwriters labor in obscurity while this goes on. Seriously, I went to film school for a couple of years and every student in my first-year screenwriting class wrote a screenplay by semester's end that was more interesting than 99% of the re-hatched turds that Hollywood dishes out year after year.
