So I've been playing Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning (What is it with try-hard fantasy titles always containing the word "Reckoning"?). It's like a diet Skyrim.
Not really a bad game but it got me thinking. Although I enjoyed Skyrim, there was one thing that bothered me. In fact, something that has bothered about most RPG. Where's the fantasy?
Seriously, it's all about elves, dwarves and fucking mages. Fuck I hate mages. It's always the same fucking thing!
But is not just RPGs, it's every fucking game! They play it so safe! They're either 'fantasy', war or space marines with a couple of Mafia ones thrown in.

I fired up a couple of SNES and Megadrive games yesterday. I was fighting an aircraft carrier... ON LAND!!!! Pew, pew!!! There were bullets and missiles everywhere! My jet fighter was spewing napalm death and I was loving every second of it!
The game was Area 88.  You just don't get that level of undiluted fun these days. I had to have some more.
So I played Contra Spirits. Fuck yeah! Nothing like early nineties heroes, they all had bandanas and no sleeves!! I had guided missiles, flame throwers, a cool hover bike and a mullet. You can't stop me!!
About the fourth stage, a helicopter showed up. I jumped up and held onto a missile it was carrying. He then fired me towards an alien cruiser.  I WAS FIGHTING AN ALIEN SHIP WHILE BOUNCING OFF INCOMING MISSILES!!!
And don't get me started with Gunstar Heroes on the Megadrive!! You fight trains, shape shifting robots, EVEN MELON BREAD!!!! CAN YOU NAME A SINGLE GAME TODAY WHERE YOU FIGHT MELON BREAD?!!

Where did all this go then? Where did it disappear to? Are we so obsessed with photorealism and real life physics that we forgot the fun?
Rocket Knight Adventures, Thunderforce IV, Streets Of Rage, Rocky And Pocky, Gynoug, Ex-Ranza, Zero Wing, Ninja Gaiden, Wild Guns, FInal Fight... how I miss games like these.

Bring back the madness, please. I want to have fun again.

That's an interesting point there. If it doesn't have elves, dwarves and mages, does it still count as fantasy? But ahh yes...I loved playing the Super Nintendo. Battletoads, Boogerman, Unirally...you don't get games like that anymore. Hell, they've even put a limit on TETRIS in the modern games! :|

I wonder though, would the latest generation of gamers be able to appreciate games that do not base themselves in photorealism and real life graphics? Hmm :hmm:

also i would like to point out there are entire hoards of indie game developers that still focus on 2d side scrollers and like minded old school games many of them are free or super cheap. if you search for indie game studios on google im sure you can find your fill of nostalgia for minimal investment(usually just your time searching)

i used to play old nes games way into the mid 90's some of my fav were yo-noid,tmnt2,1943,rocketeer,and several others. i remember going into my local video rental store and being able to rent them as well as snes games for like a buck a night while everyone else was paying like $3 a night for the n64 and ps games every time i rented there i thought what fools would pass over these great games for the newer stuff. it was a sad day when the store closed down i used to buy magic the gathering cards there as well. when i think back i didn't have a clue why they shut down but i realize now it was about the time netflix was starting to gain traction. they must have crumbled under that kind of competition on top of the always competing blockbuster.

I agree with you. I miss those games where the gameplay was simple, challenging and yet more interesting than actual's ones ...

That's why I'm more wanting to try indie games that mainstream ones now. Hopefully I'll have fun in those ... and sometime a lot of nostalgia

I've always prefered gameplay-axed games than tech-demo ones ;)

I was thinking something similar some time ago as I was playing "Manhole" on my 3DS.
Now there's a fun game that doesn't make sense. I mean, what kind of people try to cross fallen bridges?

I only just started it myself, but really, try Saints Row: The Third...Can't speak for further on in the game because...again...just started it myself. It's one of those Mafia style games but the over-the-top nature of just the first two missions, if that extends through the whole game, I can't wait to see what happens with it. Also, for an open world "Holy hell what did I just do" moment. I've heard that Just Cause is really good, no personal experience with that. I agree with you though, as someone who grew up with most of those old games you mentioned, there has definitely been a shift towards more 'realistic' games. It'd be interesting to see someone break the mold a little bit.

This is similar to my point about animation (if it can be done live-action, what's the point?). Games work very well in fantasy settings because it lets imaginations run wild. Also, by using the genre and mechanics of the game to the fullest (or at least to its great strengths), one could create something awesome. While I do play games that have a "real-world" basis, I don't believe that I would view them as highly as something that is not based in reality (again, similar to my point about animation). Anyway, that's me.

That's because you're playing the mainstream games, man.
But, believe me, you don't have to go back 20 years to find the cool badass madness.
Ever given Bayonetta a try? It's truly a WTF moment after the other! (A tad too crazy and confusing for my tastes, but still).

But there's also TF2, Borderlands... And they're not even that obscure.
As far as RPGs go, there's Fallout 3 and New Vegas. If you think about it, it's tongue-in-cheek humor all over the place and i would hardly call the mechanics realistic.

TF2 is probably the closest you get to old skool fun and mayhem. I enjoy that game immensely.
Boderlands and Fallout 3 were great, great games, but really, when you were walking from one point to another through wastelands did you say to yourself "Wahey! I'm having fun going from point A to point B!"? Despite the settin, you still didn't have absurdly madcap moments like Contra spirits.

Okay, maybe Borderlands came close, but it never pushed far enough I felt.
